About
Theatre Albany is celebrating it's 88th Season in 2021-2022! Theatre Albany produces a wide variety of live stage produtions in its 295-seat auditorium, including Broadway plays and musicals, classic dramas and comedies, contemporary plays, and even original works. There are usually three to five productions a season, one being a children's production. The theatre serves the entire Southwest Georgia region. Participation in our productions is encouraged from all ages and backgrounds as patrons, cast members and volunteers. Theatre Albany is a non-profit organization run by a diverse volunteer Board of Directors of dedicated people who bring a wealth of varied professional experience to the table. Organized in 1932 as the Little Theater League and later known as the Little Theater Players, Theatre Albany is the oldest cultural organization in the City of Albany. It has been in continuous operation since that time, with a brief interruption during world War II and the recent shut down caused by the Covid-19 Pandemic. Early productions were held in the Municipal Auditorium. The very first play was "Children of Earth" presented October 26, 1932. On March 3, 1933, the Little Thfeater was chartered. On September 4 1934, ther Little Theter opened its new home on the second floor at the corner of South Jackson St. and Broad Ave. The first show there was "The Young Idea" by Noel Coward. Later, the Little Theatre moved to a converted Odd Fellows Hall above a store front which was leased until 1966. In 1964, the theatre purchased and restored the 1850 Captain John A. Davis home. The first play in this amazing antebellum location was "Mary, Mary" which opened in February 1966. The landmark building was designated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and is still the home of Theatre Albany to this day. The mission of Theatre Albany is to create and promote the performing arts while engaging the community in cultural experiences. It is within the mission to entertain, to educate, and to provide opportunities for individual artists and to encourage a high level of community participation.
