About

The Red & Black Publishing Company, Inc. is an independent, private, not-for-profit corporation. Founded in 1893, the paper operated for 87 years under the University of Georgia. In 1980, the State Board of Regents approved independent status for the organization.

Today, we operate as a nonprofit with dual missions: giving students hands-on training in the news industry and providing our community with reliable, independent news and information.

The Red & Black student-run newsroom covers the University of Georgia and Athens, with daily reporting on news, sports, arts, culture and more at redandblack.com and a weekly newspaper that is the largest college paper in Georgia. In 2019, The Red & Black won the national Mark of Excellence Award from the Society of Professional Journalists as the best non-daily college paper in the country.

In addition to the newsroom, The Red & Black Publishing Company produces a series of award-winning special publications including UGA 101, a guide for freshmen, and Eat & Drink Athens, GA, a guide to local restaurants and bars. We also put on special events such as the annual Housing Fair.

Up to 250 students a year are involved in The Red & Black, mastering skills such as journalism, photography, digital production, videography, editing, graphic design and social media management. Outside of the newsroom, students also work on advertising sales, merchandise programs, ad design and other aspects of the corporation.

The Red & Black is operationally and financially independent from the University of Georgia. The organization receives no student activity fees or other funding from UGA. Operations are sustained through advertising sales and donations.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN: 58-1410389), The Red and Black is governed by a volunteer board of directors. The board of directors appoints the General Manager, Editor in Chief, and Student Ad Manager to carry out the day-to-day duties of publishing the newspaper and digital products.
