About
JapanFest, held every September in Duluth, is the largest celebration of Japanese culture in the Southeast. Originally conceived to promote understanding and appreciation for the culture, after 37 years the festival continues to attract over 20,000 attendees. Performances of kabuki theater, taiko drums, traditional dance, and Japanese comedy take place alongside martial arts and sumo demonstrations. Attendees can learn ikebana flower arranging, try on kimonos, pot their own bonsai trees, and participate in many other activities. Shopping and eating are also popular pastimes at the festival. There is even a cosplay contest for anime fans who love to dress up. Japanese businesses in Georgia are part of this festival community too, and their exhibits create an increased awareness of their presence around the state.
"It is always gratifying to see how much people enjoy themselves at the festival," says Kazuko Lillie, the Festival's General Manager.
