About

Newton Trails, Inc., was established as a non-governmental, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) public charity in 1997. Its mission is to promote, develop, and sustain a connected system of greenway trails which support vibrant, healthy, and prosperous communities and the conservation of natural habitats, plants, and wildlife. Newton Trails is an all-volunteer organization led by a board of directors.

Our vision has always been to create a well-connected, county-wide trail system to serve all Newton County citizens and to connect with trail systems in adjoining counties.

Our history of success includes:

  • Securing the funding to build a 4.7-mile trail at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center south of Mansfield, Georgia.
  • Paving a 1.25-mile section of trail in Oxford, Georgia (2005 to 2010).
  • Paving a walking loop trail in Porterdale, Georgia's Yellow River Park.
  • Securing a lease from Norfolk Southern Corporation for 14.9 miles of an abandoned rail line in Newton County, Georgia in 2016 and leading the development of the Cricket Frog Trail rail-to-trail trail upon that rail right-of-way. The Trail runs from the west side of Covington, Georgia to Mansfield, Georgia and will soon be extended to Newborn, Georgia.
  • Completion of 15.2 miles of Cricket Frog Trail from Covington to Newborn.
