Bavaria in Blue Ridge!

Bavaria in Blue Ridge!

Nothing says fall in the North Georgia mountains like a stroll through Helen’s cobblestone streets. From the timber-framed buildings to the sound of the nearby Chattahoochee River, Helen’s Alpine charm brings a little slice of Bavaria to our own backyard—and it’s the perfect setting for a celebration like no other.

That celebration? Oktoberfest, of course! Now in its 55th year, this Helen tradition delivers lively polka bands, riverside biergartens, and more authentic German fun right to the heart of Blue Ridge. If you’ve ever dreamed of donning lederhosen and raising a stein under the Georgia sun, this is your ticket to fall fun, Bavarian style!

This year’s Oktoberfest runs from September 4 through November 2, making it the longest-running Oktoberfest in the U.S.! Most of the action happens at the Helen Festhalle, a cozy riverside venue where the music, food, and dancing take center stage. The festival kicks off with a parade downtown on Saturday, September 6, starting at noon, so it’s a perfect way to dive right into the celebration.

Speaking of food: this year’s menu doesn’t disappoint! You’ll find all the German classics—bratwurst, pretzels, and plenty of sauerkraut—paired perfectly with cold German beers served straight from the biergartens along the river. But don’t worry if beer isn’t your thing; there are plenty of other drinks and snacks to enjoy while you take in the festive atmosphere.

Beyond brats, music is at the heart of Oktoberfest, and this year’s lineup is packed with talented bands that keep the Bavarian spirit alive. Throughout the festival, you can catch favorites like Martin Gross and Sonnenshein ExpressAutobahn KarlPolka ColaAlpenMusikanten, and more. This variety of authentic polka and Alpine tunes is sure to keep the energy flowing and the dance floor lively all season long!

Festival admission is affordable, with tickets $10 Monday-Thursday, $15 Friday-Saturday, and free on Sundays! Want to experience the festival without the crowds? Check it out during the week for a more relaxed vibe.

Whether you’re into the music, the food, or just the chance to catch up with friends while enjoying a bit of Bavarian culture, Helen Oktoberfest offers a unique way to celebrate fall in Georgia. So grab your favorite sweater, bring your appetite, and get ready to toast to another great year. Prost!
