One More Lake Day

One More Lake Day

Lake season isn't over just because school's back in. The water is still warm, the crowds have thinned, and three lake towns are proving late summer might be the best time to go. Here's where to catch one more perfect day on the water.

Mountain Water, Minus the Crowds

In the North Georgia mountains, Lake Blue Ridge keeps its cool, clear water and postcard scenery well past the holiday crowds. Morganton Point Recreation Area in Morganton offers public swimming and year-round recreation right on the lake, making it an easy case for one more northern escape before fall color takes over the ridgeline. Just around the shoreline, Lake Blue Ridge Marina rents pontoons, kayaks, and paddleboards for anyone who'd rather explore the water than just look at it, and its Boat Dock Bar & Grill keeps lunch (and the view) within arm's reach.

Lanier's Quiet Side

Closer to Atlanta, Lake Lanier trades its jam-packed coves for a mellower pace once the school bell rings. Don Carter State Park in Gainesville holds Lake Lanier's only state park shoreline, with a swimming beach, boat ramps, and wooded trails that make it easy to spend a full day without ever leaving the park. When it's time to eat, Pelican Pete's, a floating restaurant at Port Royale Marina in Gainesville, gives the afternoon an appropriately unhurried finish, plates and all, right on the water.

One Last Splash Down South

Farther south, Lake Blackshear is still very much in season. Georgia Veterans State Park in Cordele brings boating, paddling, swimming, and overnight stays together in one lakeside setting, making it a natural recreation spot for a long weekend before summer officially calls it quits. And if you’re looking to fill the rest of the day, there's always Lake Blackshear Resort’s full slate of activities to choose from.

Summer rarely announces its final good lake day, so there's no real way to know which trip will be the last one before autumn takes the shoreline back. Better to assume it's this weekend and make the most of it!
