SEC Saturdays Are Back!
Georgia’s fall calendar has a familiar rhythm: Saturday arrives, the TV gets louder, somebody starts arguing about the secondary, and a perfectly reasonable amount of food becomes an unreasonable amount of food.
The ritual returns September 5 when the Georgia Bulldogs open their 2026 season against Tennessee State at Sanford Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m., giving Athens plenty of time to settle into game-day form before the first snap.
For fans headed to Athens, tailgating around campus remains part of the equation, whether the afternoon unfolds near Myers Quad, Reed Plaza or elsewhere around Sanford Stadium. But Georgia football Saturdays have never belonged solely to the people holding tickets. Across metro Atlanta and North Georgia, breweries, patios and neighborhood gathering spots have made watching together part of their weekend routine.
The Watch Party Spreads Out
In Woodstock, Reformation Brewery has leaned into outdoor watch parties at its downtown location, pairing a big screen with a backyard where guests can settle in outside. That setup makes sense in early September, when Georgia weather hasn’t received the memo about fall but fans are ready for it anyway.
Over in Acworth, Red Top Brewhouse has massive screens along with a shaded patio and outdoor fire pits. Pontoon Brewing in Sandy Springs takes a similarly screen-heavy approach, with five big-screen TVs, a large projector and an expansive outdoor patio.
Downtown Alpharetta’s Central City Tavern is even more explicit about the season, promoting SEC Saturdays and showing games across wall-to-wall screens. Together, these spots reflect how game day has spread well beyond stadium parking lots. A Saturday crowd can form wherever somebody has the game on and enough chairs.
Tailgating Without the Traffic
Hosting at home has its own advantages, starting with control of the menu. Smoked wings and pulled pork sliders travel well from grill to plate, while pimento cheese dip, buffalo chicken dip and barbecue nachos can hold down the snack table without requiring much ceremony.
Georgia peach salsa gives the spread a local touch, and bourbon pecan brownies handle dessert. For larger groups, a DIY burger bar or grilled bratwurst station keeps the host from taking everyone’s order like an overwhelmed short-order cook.
The rest can stay simple. Put out a snack board, set up a themed drink station and move the cornhole boards somewhere they won’t interfere with the serious business happening near the television.
Football season may start inside Sanford Stadium, but Saturdays ripple through communities across Georgia. By kickoff, plenty of fans will have already found their seat, their people and, ideally, the good dip.
