Alpharetta International Academy: A Montessori Journey of Wonder and Discovery
Alpharetta International Academy (AIA) isn’t just a school—it’s a place where young learners grow into independent, curious, and compassionate individuals. This year, the highly respected Montessori institution added another chapter to its legacy by earning the 2024 Best of Georgia Award, an esteemed honor voted on by customers and presented by the Georgia Business Journal. This award highlights the profound connection between AIA and the community it serves, reflecting the trust and admiration it has built over decades.
The Best of Georgia Awards, hosted by Gbj.com, celebrate excellence across industries and communities. AIA’s win stands out because it was determined by public votes—a testament to the deep appreciation parents, alumni, and community members have for the school’s transformative approach to education.
Founded in 1981 by Dixie Oliver, AIA has spent over forty years nurturing students through the Montessori philosophy. From toddlers to middle schoolers, the school provides a learning environment that champions independence, creativity, and kindness. Inspired by observing a friend’s Montessori classroom in the late 1970s, Oliver envisioned a school where education would go beyond academics, emphasizing respect and compassion as essential building blocks. “Montessori can bring out the wonderfulness in children, but it cannot happen without an atmosphere of kindness,” Oliver says. Today, that philosophy thrives under the guidance of Dr. Isabel Eliaschev, AIA’s Head of School, who describes the academy as “a place of creative, active learning built around children’s intellectual and social needs.”
AIA offers a wide range of programs for students from 18 months old through middle school. Its Montessori curriculum blends practical life skills, sensorial exploration, language, math, Spanish, Engineering, and Model UN, fostering curiosity and a love of learning. Enrichment programs in art, music, yoga, and physical education help ensure a holistic educational experience. With small class sizes and a focus on individualized instruction, the school emphasizes mastery and understanding rather than rote memorization.
Beyond academics, AIA is a vibrant community hub. Its six-acre campus near Webb Bridge Park provides students with ample outdoor space to learn and play. At the same time, the school celebrates cultural diversity in its classroom practices and through events like international festivals. AIA’s dedicated faculty, known for their nurturing and passionate teaching, engage in ongoing professional development to bring the best educational practices to their classrooms.
Winning the Best of Georgia Award is a milestone that AIA has accomplished for three consecutive years. It underscores the impact AIA has made in the lives of its students and their families. For Dr. Isabel Eliaschev, the recognition is deeply meaningful. “This honor belongs to the entire AIA family—students, parents, faculty, and alumni,” she shares. “We’re so grateful for the trust and support of our community.”
As Alpharetta International Academy looks to the future, its mission remains steadfast: to nurture young minds in an environment where education is rooted in kindness, creativity, and respect. With its Best of Georgia Award reflecting its dedication, AIA continues to inspire and prepare the next generation for a world of possibility.
