In the Groove for Record Store Day

In the Groove for Record Store Day

Remember that one record you used to have? Maybe it had someone’s name scribbled on the jacket, a passive-aggressive warning (“Don’t scratch this or you’re toast”), or dog-eared corners from years of love and overuse. Maybe your dog literally chewed the corner. Either way, it wasn’t just a record—it was yours.

And while you might never find that exact copy again, Record Store Day (April 12) gives you the next best thing: a fresh-pressed version of that same album, plus a few never-before-heard releases to fall in love with. So, between old favorites, new twists, and the thrill of the hunt… What will you be spinning this RSD?

Spin Local, Shop Loud

Conceived by a few record shop owners with a lot of heart, this mission to celebrate indie music culture officially started in 2008. RSD’s gone global since, but at its ever-spinning core, this international movement is still about the community behind the counter and the crate-diggers in line.

This two-story gem is part record shop, part rock ’n’ roll gift emporium. Downstairs: wall-to-wall new releases. Upstairs: used vinyl and cool rock biographies. If the "Deaf Man" himself, Steve, is around, expect a solid recommendation and at least one wild concert story.

If Mojo sounds familiar, it’s probably because it’s been part of Roswell’s music scene for years—just not always in the same spot. Now settled in a cozy, converted house on Woodstock Street, Mojo’s rooms are packed with fresh releases, classic cuts, and whatever’s spinning behind the counter. You might walk out with Petty. Or jazz. Or something that will change your life.

This spot lives up to its name—it’s always serving up something fresh. Located in downtown “music mecca” Macon, Fresh Produce is RSD-ready. They’ve got bins full of gems, a steady stream of preorders, and merch galore (Allman Brothers t-shirt, anyone?)

Don’t let the skateboards fool you! This hybrid skate-and-record shop is serious about RSD. Their shelves are stocked, their staff is stoked, and their open mics are legendary.

Quick heads up: Just because a store isn’t on the official list doesn’t mean it’s not taking part—but also, don’t assume every record shop is. Best move? Reach out to your local store directly and see how they’re celebrating. A little friendly intel goes a long way when you’re hunting limited-edition vinyl. RSD Tips: Or, How Not to Cry in the Parking Lot

  1. Get there early. Like, hoodie-in-the-dark early.
  2. Make a wishlist. The RSD list is long, so know your must-haves.
  3. Call ahead and ask (nicely). Stores order weeks in advance and only get a limited number of each release—if they get it at all.
  4. Be cool. Don’t shove. Don’t sulk.
  5. No pre-orders. No holds. That’s part of the fun.

Maybe you won’t find that record—but you might find something better. Happy hunting!
