Springer & Company, CPA Firm: Crunching the Odds

At twenty-three, most people are clasping diplomas with the ink barely dry, setting foot into an entry-level career, or even discovering what they want to do in life. But for Ellen Springer, owner of Springer & Company CPAs, the storyline was different. At this tender age, she’d already launched one of her very first CPA firms―with a solid catalyst prompting her to set that ambition into motion.

Formerly, she’d been employed by an international firm who in no uncertain terms told her that, short of a miracle, she’d have to work at least 12 years before making partner. With a newborn she was eager to spend time with, and the exasperation from the company’s efforts to dissuade her burning desire, Springer launched her very first firm.

However, she quickly learned that establishing herself as a young female entrepreneur in a male-dominated industry was not a cakewalk. Springer found herself being forced to prove her competency and aptitude repeatedly, often cutting it close with her roles as a mother and business owner. “I remember giving birth to my son on a Sunday, leaving the hospital at noon on Tuesday, and going straight to the office,’ she says. “Payroll tax returns were due on January 31, and I had to meet deadline.”

Regardless of the intensity of her career, Springer made it a point to never let the kids’ necessities fall to the wayside. She never missed their plays, concerts, ball games, or events―even if that meant working later that night into the early morning or having an earpiece glued to her ear during baseball games as she kept score, or chatted in turn with both coaches and clients between innings.

Fast forward 40 years, and Springer is now not only a proud mother to her grown children, but she’s also the founder of the successful Springer & Company CPAs, a firm located in Kennesaw.

With its ambitious motto, "helping people keep more of what they make", the firm is different from most others. Springer & Company CPAs lets clients decide how they want to meet with the firm, whether via email, phone, Zoom, or in-person. For those who opt to go the digital route, the firm has encrypted portals for data transfer, giving clients peace of mind.

Once a convenient channel is identified, the firm devises a business strategy session for a flat fee and then designs services based on clients’ needs. From thereon out, it embraces a team approach. An accountant is assigned to the client alongside Springer herself, who personally reviews each and every business or personal tax return, before personally placing a call to the client to discuss results.

“We’re not a factory cranking out returns without discussing them,” says Springer. “I enjoy putting my 40+ years of experience to work for my clients, each and every day.”

And she invests heavily to ensure her staff also have strong competencies and a keen passion for clients. All associates are certified QuickBooks Online Certified ProAdvisors. And they all work hard to maintain open lines of communication, proactively updating clients about upcoming deadlines, reminding them of pending deliverables, and scheduling follow-up conferences throughout the year.

The firm also guides technology-receptive clients to embrace technological solutions, offering online QuickBook subscriptions at an up to 50% discounted price and offers packages for setup and training. “We want our clients to have access to information at their fingertips,” says Springer.

This level of personal care and attention has earned the firm the Best of Georgia 2020 designation, for which Springer is deeply humbled and grateful to her clients and Kennesaw.

“The most rewarding part of my job,” she says, “Is helping clients keep more of what they make to drive a positive difference in their lives.”
